Course description: Foundation doctors take part in simulation based training focused on methods of Recognising and Managing the Deterioration of Patients using tools such as SBAR, A-E Assessment, NEWS Scoring and Human Factors.

Each case scenario lasts about 15–20 minutes and participants are asked to manage the patient’s presenting complaint as they would during any acute real-life situation. After each scenario, the tutors provided both the participants and observers with a debriefing session that would include giving feedback to the two trainees being assessed.

Educational Objectives:

  • Take a good targeted history, examination, and take appropriate investigations.
  • To Interpret clinical findings and results
  • To correctly manage and treat and refer when appropriate
  • To establish correct prioritisation with efficiency
  • To demonstrate appropriate communication skills with patient and colleagues
  • To demonstrate good teamwork skills

TTF1 (Wwow)

Aimed at: Undergraduates

Course description: Undergraduate Ttf1 medical simulation is building on skills learnt in previous simulation session we will be expanding the learning outcomes and scenarios preparing each individual transitioning to F1.

This involves a 1 day interactive session involving a MDT Virtual Ward Round followed by simulation.

Each case scenario lasts about 20-30 minutes and participants are asked to manage the patient’s presenting complaint as they would during any acute real-life situation. After each scenario, the tutors provided both the participants and observers with a debriefing session that would include giving feedback to the two trainees being assessed. A trainee can make mistakes and learn from them without the fear of harming the patient.

Simulation skills competencies including communication skills, history-taking, professional attitudes, awareness of ethical basis of healthcare, physical examination, procedural skills, clinical laboratory skills, diagnostic skills, therapeutic skills, resuscitation skills, critical thinking, clinical reasoning, problem solving, team-work, organisation skills and management skills.

The MDT Virtual Ward Round allows for Ttf1 candidates to work alongside Physiotherapy, OT, Pharmacy and Nursing students to establish a full ward round with live patients. This will enable to team to manage the patient’s presenting complaint as they would during any acute real-life situation.competencies including communication skills, history-taking, professional attitudes, awareness of ethical basis of healthcare, physical examination, clinical laboratory skills, diagnostic skills, therapeutic skills, critical thinking, clinical reasoning, problem solving, team-work, organisation skills and management skills.

CMT/IMT

Aimed at: CMT/IMT Doctors

Course description: Simulation based training including skills development.

Two essential components of this programme are high fidelity simulation-based training and a workshop focusing on clinical skills. This would allow them to practice common scenarios encountered and skills in a safe environment, and provide them with resources and techniques to help them deal with anxiety and stress.

Part of the education requirements are attendance: Human Factors and Debriefing.

Structure of the course: The training programme is structured over a variety of days, tackling some of the different issues frequently encounter when working in the NHS.

The main educational principles behind the course were spiral learning/experiential learning through simulation-based education and debriefing with pre- and post-course assessment of the participants’ abilities by competence and confidence questionnaires. During a second day of simulation-based training, the candidates experience more complex clinical scenarios representative of challenges facing their role.
